Person-Centred Therapy

Person–centred philosophy prizes your unique experience of being you

Hello, I am Teresa (Trees) Dowson. I am a Person - centred therapist working in Fareham, Hampshire, UK. I also offer remote therapy via the telephone or online video platform.

Being heard, feeling accepted and valued feels so powerful. As your counsellor: I am a guest in your world, remaining with you as you explore your thoughts, feelings, and your experience of life.

This might take the form of short-term counselling, to explore a current concern; or longer-term psychotherapy aiming to unravel past hurts that are impacting your life right now. Both approaches can open up a wealth of possibility for a future in which you feel like the real you – able to draw upon your inner strength and resources which make you an exceptional human being.

Connection through a therapeutic relationship is at the heart of effective therapy. Taking that first step into therapy can feel difficult. The expectation of sharing your experience with someone you don’t know might feel intimidating. It feels so important for us to be sure that we can work therapeutically together. For this reason, an initial enquiry is followed by 30 minutes free phone consultation to see if I am the right therapist for you.

I am a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy and abide by their ethical framework.

About Me

My name is Teresa (Trees) Dowson. I would like to share a little about who I am and what type of counselling I provide.

My journey

The journey I have been on to become a person – centred therapist has led to an enthusiastic desire to support all individuals with a particular passion in championing anyone whose way of being can feel ‘out of step’ with others. My research for the BA (Hons) was focussed on autism and the person – centred approach. This left me feeling passionate about promoting this therapy as being uniquely suited to supporting individuals who sometimes feel misunderstood.

I have become familiar with the conditions required for a therapeutic relationship and that offering unconditional positive regard and empathy through a trusting therapeutic relationship can be transformative, for anyone. I strongly believe that connection is key to therapeutic change.

My Approach

Everyone is unique and the person – centred approach is about being open and curious to understand the person in front of you. With no preconceived ideas based on any diagnoses – my role is to be with the client and accept them, not to assume I am the expert. I am curious about the client’s world and personal experience. My goal is to co – create an environment that feels comfortable for safe exploration of the client’s feelings.

My Experience

Prior to launching in private practice, I volunteered for services for young people, carers, and those on low incomes; meeting clients with a wide range of presenting issues.

I have a lived experience of supporting autistic individuals and recently recognised that I am on the autistic spectrum myself. I continue to focus my continual professional development in this area. I am particularly interested in understanding why women and girls are more likely to be mis-diagnosed with mental health issues rather than discovering that they are neurodivergent. It is my goal to reach more females that may suspect that they are on the autistic spectrum and support them as they explore their experience and move towards greater self- awareness and acceptance.

I currently also work as a specialist mentor for Autism Hampshire, supporting students at Portsmouth University accessing the service.

My Professional Membership

As a member of the UK’s largest association for counsellors, the British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP), I am committed to adhering to their code of practice; consistently demonstrating a good understanding of the ethical implications for counselling; and keeping up to date with legal obligations as outlined in current legislation. To promote best practice, I have regular professional supervision in line with BACP recommendations.

I am a member of The Person-Centred Association, attending regular encounter meetings and am a member of the non – pathologizing special interest group. I am passionate about promoting the person – centred approach in all areas of life and respecting the autonomy of all individuals.

What I can Help With

It is my experience that person – centred therapy can be powerful in supporting individuals with a variety of presenting issues, including (but not limited to) the following experiences:

* Anxiety

* Isolation

* Stress

* Low mood

* Depression

* Self – harming

* Suicidal Ideation

* Chronic pain

* Relationship difficulties

* Carers

* Autism / Neurodiversity

* Diagnosed/ suspected mental health issues

* Trauma

* Distress

* Personal development

Neurodivergent - affirming therapy

My counselling practice is 'neurodivergent - affirming' which means I do not subscribe to a medical model view of neurodivergence as something to be cured or treated. I consider myself to be 'Autism informed' and continue to improve my understanding of the neurodiversity paradigm through ongoing continual professional development.

Each individual is unique.

We all have a unique way of being and a unique way of experiencing the world. This might mean checking in with an individual regarding their preferred way of communicating or finding out what changes might need to be made in order to successfully co - create the optimum environment for successful therapy.

It also involves recognising the client's own boundaries in therapy and respecting these rather than pushing a client to talk about something they do not feel comfortable exploring. At all times, I work in a way that respects that the client is in the lead for our therapy sessions and the client sets the pace.

This is at the heart of the Person - centred approach to therapy.

Sessions & Fees

Standard sessions last for 5o-minutes and this is often referred to as a 'therapeutic hour'. These can be weekly, fortnightly or when it is mutually convenient. To me it does not feel that there is any 'right or wrong' regarding frequency of therapy sessions - processing during therapy is not limited to the therapeutic hour.

It is my aim to provide a 'bespoke' service for clients and meet them 'where they are' - be this through face to face therapy or remote counselling (video/phone/text). Dates, times and method of therapy is mutually agreed between myself and the client and confirmed at each appointment.

The standard fee for each session is £55. This is payable via bank transfer 24-hours before the appointment. If paying by cash - a first and last payment during the first face to face appointment is required. At least 24-hours notice of cancellation is requested to avoid potential charge for missed sessions.

Let us ‘co-create’ our own therapeutic space together

I approach the counselling session with an open mind, drawing from creative therapy ideas such as art, playing games or writing. My aim is to create with the client an environment that feels comfortable and unique. This is particularly useful for supporting neurodiversity (ADHD, Autism) where conventional talking therapy may feel overwhelming. If you wish to bring art, play, or writing materials with you to the session – feel free and we can incorporate this.
